# Aerial, terrain and imagery sources — Treebones Resort

## Location
| | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 71895 Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920 (about a mile north of Gorda, east side of Hwy 1, via Willow Creek Rd) | treebonesresort.com /contact, /faqs/getting-here |
| Lat/Lon (official site schema.org) | **35.8842, -121.4553** | treebonesresort.com homepage JSON-LD |
| OSM "Treebones Resort" (tourism=hotel, way 924323312) | 35.88427, -121.45533 | OpenStreetMap / Nominatim |
| Wikimapia | 35°53'2"N 121°27'20"W (35.8839, -121.4556) | wikimapia.org/21553935 |
| UTM | Zone 10N (EPSG:26910): **639429 E, 3972206 N** | converted |
| Ground elevation at that point | about 121 m (397 ft) from the 2017–18 LiDAR. The site says "420 ft above sea level" | DEM clip below |

Heads-up: the site warns "GPS and map services do not always place us correctly". The points above all agree within about 40 m and fall on the Lodge/lawn-bowl pad.

## Already downloaded (in `sources/terrain/`)
| File | What | License |
|---|---|---|
| `treebones_dem_1m_1200m_clip.tif` | 1 m bare-earth DEM, 1200×1200 m centred on the resort, EPSG:26910, float32 metres (about 1 to 339 m). Taken from USGS 3DEP tiles `USGS_1M_10_x63y398` + `x64y398`, project **CA_AZ_FEMA_R9_Lidar_2017_D18** (published 2021) | USGS 3DEP, **public domain** (credit "USGS 3DEP" requested) |
| `treebones_hillshade_1m.png` | Hillshade made from the DEM. Red circle = the official lat/lon | derived, public domain |
| `treebones_naip_2022_0.6m_1200m_clip.tif` / `_preview.jpg` | NAIP 2022-05-18 orthophoto, 0.6 m, RGB, same 1200 m window. Tile `ca_m_3512105_sw_10_060_20220518`, fetched through the Microsoft Planetary Computer mirror | USDA FSA NAIP, **public domain** |

The NAIP clearly shows the lodge cloverleaf, the pool, the lawn-bowl loop, the yurt ring, the parking strip, and two white rectangular structures to the south. Those may be the autonomous tents or the Cove, **unconfirmed**. That makes NAIP the best base for georeferencing the hand-drawn map. Both the NAIP and the LiDAR **predate** the 2026 Plaskett Fire, and the LiDAR (2017–18) predates the newer units.

**Elevation / LiDAR (USGS 3DEP, public domain)**
- TNM API query (bbox -121.462,35.879,-121.449,35.889):
- 1 m DEM tiles: https://prd-tnm.s3.amazonaws.com/StagedProducts/Elevation/1m/Projects/CA_AZ_FEMA_R9_Lidar_2017_D18/TIFF/USGS_1M_10_x63y398_CA_AZ_FEMA_R9_Lidar_2017_D18.tif (+ `x64y398`). These are COGs, so windowed reads work.
- LiDAR point clouds (LAZ) covering the site: CA_AZ_FEMA_R9_Lidar_2017_D18 (tiles 58321845, 58321849), CA_West_Coast_LiDAR_2016_B16 (10SFE63753972, 10SFE63903970, 10SFE63903972), ARRA_CA_CENTRALCOAST_Z4_2010 (000434). Download URLs come from the same TNM API with `datasets=Lidar Point Cloud (LPC)`. Use these for tree heights and canopy (first returns) if you want trees placed from data.
- 1/3 arc-second (about 10 m) seamless DEM n36w122. Use it for the distant ridges and backdrop.

**Orthoimagery**
- NAIP (public domain): 2022, 2020, 2018, 2016 (0.6 m); 2014, 2012 (1 m). STAC: `https://planetarycomputer.microsoft.com/api/stac/v1/collections/naip/items/ca_m_3512105_sw_10_060_20220518`. Also on USGS EarthExplorer and the USDA Geospatial Gateway. Check for a 2024 CA NAIP release before the final build.
- OpenStreetMap (ODbL; attribute "© OpenStreetMap contributors"). Coverage of the resort is sparse.

**Look-only, never ship, never trace into assets**
- **Google Maps / Earth / Photorealistic 3D Tiles**: the Google Maps Platform terms forbid scraping, caching, or exporting imagery, and forbid making derivative content such as tracing, photogrammetry, or meshes from it. 3D Tiles can only be shown live through the Map Tiles API with Google attribution. OK for a human to look at for orientation. Not OK as a texture, mesh, or tracing source.
- **Esri World Imagery**: needs an ArcGIS account under Esri's terms plus attribution, and offline export or derivative use is restricted (the imagery is licensed from Maxar and others). Same rule: look only.
- **Mapbox Satellite / Apple / Bing**: the same kind of restrictions apply.
- California Coastal Records Project (californiacoastline.org): oblique aerials of the whole coast, © Kenneth & Gabrielle Adelman. Permission needed. Not checked for Treebones frames.
- The terms above are summarised from the providers' published ToS. The crew should re-read the current terms before relying on any of them.

## How to tie the hand-drawn map to the real world
1. Pick 8 or more control points visible on both the official map and NAIP 2022: Lodge cloverleaf centre, pool, spa, the parking lot stairs, Highway 1 / Willow Creek Rd junction, the lawn-bowl loop, distinct yurts (1, 2, 13, 14), and the massage studio.
2. Fit a **thin-plate spline** (not affine; the sketch is distorted perspective) from map x/y to UTM.
3. Push every UNITS.csv point through it, then **snap each unit to the matching building footprint on NAIP**. Have json or Treebones confirm before shipping.
4. The Cove, the autonomous tents, and campsites 103–105 need positions from json's doc or drone footage, because the official map doesn't show them.
